Investigation Reflection Prompt

The topic that I would most like to work on is to learn about the job of a Physical Therapist. I am interested in what their job is like in depth and would like to focus on the elbow/arm/hand area. I would also like to research about the rehab involved.

Some background information on this topic is that I have experienced a very traumatic incident to my elbow/arm/hand and would like to incorporate into this presentation what it is like to go through something like what I went through. I broke my elbow in several places and damaged my nerve while playing soccer and so had to go to Madison to see a specialist. I would also be able to set up an interview with a Physical Therapist since I am frequently seeing one anyways. She has really taught me a bunch of stuff about how the nerves, muscles, and bones all work in your arm! Lastly, I have materials that are related to the subject that I would be able to incorporate into the project such as the dynamique splint that I have had to often wear, x-rays of my arm before and after the incident, the screw that the doctors put in my arm to fix me up (They did clean it before giving it to me!), and the scar to prove that it all really did happen!

I selected this option because this injury has been a huge part of my life for the past few months and, though you may not realize it, I have gone through an awful lot. I would like to share this experience with other people in hopes that they might better understand what it is like for people who have disabilities due to severe accidents. I know my injury was on a smaller scale than some of those kinds of things, but it sure is more than a normal broken arm or leg! After all, I may not gain all of the range of motion in my arm back.

Another reason why I would like to research this topic is because I have grown increasingly more interested about Physical Therapists as I have continued to work with one. Their jobs are very important and I would like to know a little bit more about what they do. Maybe I will want to be one when I grow up! I was also hoping that we would be able to interact with the audience by demonstrating on one of them some of the PT stretches I do. Lastly, I think there is a lot of information out about this topic and I won’t have to worry about stressing out because I can’t find enough.

I really want to research more about a Physical Therapist for this project and I feel it could turn out to be a terrific project!

How Antique Clocks Work

I want to study how antique clocks work. I want to study how they work because I have always found them very interesting and fascinating! When I was younger at my grandpas house there was this big clock that had a wind-up key in the back. You could twist the key and watch the gears turning, it was awesome to me. I know how clocks work, and I have gone through and looked into the clocks and I have seen them being fixed and built. I want to do antique clocks instead of new clocks because they have more of a differently wired and geared system on the inside, and are very different then modern clocks. I find the antique clocks more in-depth and fun to observe and build then the modern clocks. I have several different clocks that we could use, I have the big wind-up key one, and we could barrow it. I have several other antique clocks that we could use to! I think showing models of antique clocks and how they work would be a very good topic choice for my group!
